Shirlise: Evening Matt
Dorks Ahoy: Hey there Matt - it's been a while Matt_Beck: Hi there Mama~K: Hi Matt! Mom Beck: Hi! Shirlise: Hey matt change to green for me Abby: Hey Matt Matt_Beck: Green it is Shirlise: LOL! that works Matt_Beck: cool Shirlise: btw are you back home Matt or still in LA? Matt_Beck: I'm back home Shirlise: ok...Matt say 5 mins and we will start??? Matt_Beck: oh yeah. no problems Shirlise: ok i think we are gonna have to start and just work through some of the technical difficulties... Mom Beck: Yes you are I can vouch for that Shirlise: LOL so we will start with CD questions....cause those are my fav! Dorks Ahoy: Matt - first question....How did you come up with the title and cover art for your CD? Matt_Beck: Well, I didn't have a title and was trying to think of one... I took some pics for album artwork and I really liked this one pic (that wound up being the cover)... In the back is part of an ad for Dewars and I like the little piece of text that you could see "Anything Which Gives You Pleasure". It just rang well when I said it and read it. Also, Paul Doucette said he really liked it when I mentioned that I might use it as the name of the cd Prezent: lol well that a true blue endorsement if i ever heard one Mama~K: Paul D. stamp of approval...LOL Dorks Ahoy: did you take the photo yourself or did you have a photographer do it? Matt_Beck: I got a pro photog. and we went down to the lower east side where I like to go hear a lot of music and we took a bunch of pics in front of store fronts,it was really early in the morning and freezing Dorks Ahoy: you do look kinda chilly in the pic! Matt_Beck: I had a prof graphic designer put it all together too Mom Beck: Well worth it, Matt. All the photos turned out so well. Matt_Beck: Chris Trapper (from The Push Stars) wife Hania did it for me Dorks Ahoy: folks you had worked with in the past? Matt_Beck: She's done all the Push Star covers too Dorks Ahoy: ok....Matt - What was the process for choosing which songs got to be on this album? Are there any that we might see on the the sophomore CD? Matt_Beck: There's a few that didnt make it. Dunno if they'll make the next one. We'll see. I simply choce which songs I thought were the strongest. I also wanted to have a couple of short instrumental moments too. Abby: i just like that answer because we can now quote you on "the next one". Shirlise: Great selection....LOL about that "next one" Dorks Ahoy: Ha - very true! Matt_Beck: I don't have that many songs to have the luxury of picking and choosing yet Shirlise: you said "next one"! Shirlise: we heard it Dorks Ahoy: did any other folks influence your picks? Matt_Beck: I definitely would like to do another one Prezent: excellent Shirlise: :::Insert Happy Dance::: Mom Beck: You have my support, Matt Matt_Beck: I had Dave Palmer (drummer from Rod Stewart's band) as co-producer, so he let me know what songs he thought were better than others Shirlise: Well all the choices are great Matt_Beck: I had lots of friends help me with song order Shirlise: although we have a biased opinion :-) Matt_Beck: I asked everyone for which songs were their faves so I could put them in a good order Dorks Ahoy: do you have any faves? Matt_Beck: Biggest problem was that I dont have a lot of up-tempo songs Mom Beck: It wasn't a problem, Matt Shirlise: i agree mom :-) Mom Beck: Your slower songs sometimes felt like they were an up-tempo Matt_Beck: I think my fave 2 songs are "I'll Wait For You" and "Shelter Me", but I go back and forth with others too Prezent: lol a lot of artists don't however doesn't stop them putting the disco beat on everything lol Dorks Ahoy: There are some major albums that don't have alot of uptempo stuff, if the content is good, it's good! Mom Beck: Beautiful. How about W. 70th st. Shirlise: I like West 70 alot :-) Prezent: i do like i'll wait for you, that is an excellent song Mom Beck: I know that you do, Shirlise Mom Beck: Yes. lots of voice passion :-) Mom Beck: Sorry, Matt, I'm also a fan of yours, :-) Dorks Ahoy: Matt - If a label approached you to take you on as an artist - would you do THAT over touring/performing with Rob or MB20 etc...? Matt_Beck: I don't know that I'd do it OVER working with MB20. I'm sure there's be a way to do both, just the way Paul, Kyle and Rob have. Prezent: lol excellent answer Dorks Ahoy: if you could, that would be great! Mom Beck: Excellent question, also Shirlise: Just a small tour Shirlise: i'm thinking NY, NV and CA Dorks Ahoy: yeah, a small club tour! Mama~K: I was going to ...It wouldn't be the same without you with either MB or Rob Shirlise: maybe? Shirlise: oh an IL Abby: eh ehmmm lise Abby: thank you Abby: or nashville depending on the time, before summer next year il, after, tn forsure Shirlise: sorry abs Matt_Beck: Honestly, I'm thinking about licensing more than touring, but I'm sure I'll do a few shows. Dorks Ahoy: I agree, I wouldn't want you to leave RT or MB, but I'd also want you to do what YOU want to do to be the happiest... Shirlise: Dorks Ahoy: SD please Dorks Ahoy: but I'll settle for LA LOL Mama~K: anywhere near Sacramento Ca. Shirlise: Just a few request for shows Matt :-) Prezent: brooklyn or katonah?? Mom Beck: Nice try,Sussan Dorks Ahoy: matt - do you need to be in a particular place, time or state of mind to find inspiration for writing songs, or does it just come to you? Prezent: thanks Dolores i do try..... i'm a very trying person lol Mom Beck: Shirlie, make Dawn the first always on the list for questions. Hers are so well put. Matt_Beck: I don't need to be in a particular place or state to write. Most of the time inspiration will hit randomly. Dorks Ahoy: I'm just the messenger, I wish they were mine...LOL Mom Beck: I didn't know that. They are excellent questions Matt_Beck: Sometimes you have to force it a lil, like when u make plans to write WITH someone Dorks Ahoy: do you like to start with music or words or? Matt_Beck: I like to keep a running list of ideas in my head and on garageband that I can reference when I'm inspired Matt_Beck: I start with music almost always Dorks Ahoy: you mentioned writing with folks...anyone in particular work with you on the CD? Matt_Beck: Some of the core ideas came from "writing jams" I had with Ari Hest, Rob Calder and Pete Wilhoit. But the songs are mine Prezent: you are in fine company with that lot although i am not that familiar with Pete Matt_Beck: I had Dave Palmer and Conrad Korsch from Rod's band contribute alot to the bass and drums parts Matt_Beck: Pete Wilhoit is the drummer in Fiction Plane (Sting's son's band) Mom Beck: This is what added to the success of your songs. Prezent: ok how interesting thank matt Shirlise: It's an amazing CD...I recommend everyone pick up 10! Dorks Ahoy: Matt - How have your musical influences changed over the years? In particular, your first influences as opposed to the ones you have now? Matt_Beck: I also had Rob Calder, Dan Hickey, Stevie Blacke, Alan Childs and my mom play on it too Mama~K: I'll get mine in palm springs! I'll get extra to bring home ! Prezent: yeah i heard the you had the fantastically talented dolores on the album Matt_Beck: I started off as a classical musician, I got into rock when I was 13-14, then discovered jazz around 16-17 then came full circle back to Rock and songs as an adult. I still enjoy all types of music though Mom Beck: If any of you ever get a chance to see the wonderful book of The Uncommon Sound, a wonderful write up on many of the left-handed guitarists, you will find Matt in that book, and he speaks about his musical influences and the changes that he has gone through Dorks Ahoy: Any particular artists Matt? Matt_Beck: I remember really liking Chopin and Debussy as a child, then I got into Led Zeppelin, The Who, Van Halen etc as a teen and then into all the great Jazz artist. (Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Duke etc). Now I really like songwriters like... Mama~K: That is a big jump from chopin to led zeppelin.lol [color:green]Matt_Beck: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson etc Mom Beck: Yes, but the simiarity is that both are written with great passion. Mom Beck: Just different styles Matt_Beck: I still enjoy every artist I mentioned to this day and of course a ton more Mama~K: very true. Dorks Ahoy: Matt - What musical instrument that you don't already play, would you like to learn?' Matt_Beck: Either cello or trombone Mom Beck: I'll wait until you answer first, Matt, but did you mention trombone Mom Beck: Matt, I have a cello at home that you could borrow Shirlise: those two would put you up to 100 instruments Matt? Shirlise: Dorks Ahoy: Do you play any wind instruments already Matt? Matt_Beck: no, I don't play any brass or woodwinds. although some of you might've seen me blow into a melodica (small wind keyboard) Mom Beck: Will you bring that back, Matt. 'Haven't seen in for awhile Mama~K: maybe there could be a cello or trombone piece on your "next" cd. Dorks Ahoy: Why trombone over trumpet or sax or clarinet - is it the sound or??? Matt_Beck: I like warmer bassier tones Dorks Ahoy: that's what I figured. Shirlise: Nice injection there Kris Matt_Beck: even when I play guitar I strive for warmer tones usually Mama~K: any chance to talk about the "next one" right Shirlise: yup Dorks Ahoy: hence the cello as opposed to violin... Dorks Ahoy: I LOVE cello Mom Beck: Shall I bring my cello over the next time I see you, Matt? Matt_Beck: no thanks. I have too much to worry about with just guitar and keys Mom Beck: It's yours to tool with Mom Beck: I thought so. Little time for that now Dorks Ahoy: Matt - You just came off touring with The Break & Repair Method...what are the pros and cons of playing smaller venues in your opinion? Matt_Beck: well, the pros are that it's more intimate so you're alot closer to the audience (physically and emotionally) and that makes for a more shared experience and I like that... Matt_Beck: cons are that the conditions are usually alot tougher (eg. small or no dressing rooms, no soundcheck, sometimes no audience :-) Prezent: oh the no audience has gotta suck Prezent: lol do you still play in case the cleaner turns up or something Shirlise: Really...no audience??? Prezent: or just have a beer pack up and go home Mom Beck: Musicians love playing for themselves Mama~K: A few of us went to the warfield in San Francisco to see you guys and I loved the small venue. Matt_Beck: The Warfield was one of the bigger ones too Prezent: the problem with some of the smaller venues is the sound is not always that fab. Prezent: does that frustrate you at all? Matt_Beck: After we played the Warfield we all went to the Fillmore to see Tom Morello (from Rage Against The Machine) play. Our friends were playing in the band Shirlise: In regards to Sussans question matt...how does the smaller venue affect your performance Shirlise: say when the acoustics aren't so good Prezent: thanks shirlise Shirlise: Matt_Beck: well, when the sound sucks, it frustrating. There's not much u can do. And if you're the openers, there's even less u can do so you just deal Prezent: have you got any venues that you'd rather not play? Prezent: if you had a choice that is. Matt_Beck: I dont like playing venues that aren't set up for having bands usually. Dorks Ahoy: Matt - what would be your top 3 locations (cities, venues, countries) that you would LIKE to play or HAVE played? Matt_Beck: Top 3 I HAVE played would be: Wembley Stadium, MSG maybe Red Rocks? Shirlise: Red Rock is a new addtion to your list ;-) Mama~K: how awesome was that to play @ Wembley Shirlise: Ok I'm gonna take over for the last few.... Matt_Beck: Top 3 I would LIKE to play: Budukon, maybe Africa, and definitely SNL :-) Shirlise: That would be great to see you on SNL! Shirlise: Ok Matt, since you spend alot of time on the road. When you are touring, what do you bring with you too make yourself feel more at home? Prezent: SNL? Dorks Ahoy: saturday night live Shirlise: Saturday Night Live Prezent: ahhh tankies Matt_Beck: my computer, (which has iChat and iPhoto) Shirlise: Ah the MAC Shirlise: Ok couple of Rob questions for ya Shirlise: Any ides when the tour will be Mama~K: SNL would be awesome! Matt_Beck: Well, I'm told the single is coming out in March so there'd be some promo around then I'd think and the cd is supposed to come out in May so I imagine there's be some touring then but nothing is official yet. Shirlise: Is everyone returning for the tour...band wise that is Matt_Beck: I believe so though I think we've lost Vivian and Jenny to Pink :-) Mom Beck: Oh, too bad. I adored them. But the new girls were wonderful Prezent: yeah i heard that too. Shirlise: I am super excited to see you all on stage again! Shirlise: last few...i know its late there matt Shirlise: you were working as the musical producer on rock of ages what was that like compared to just being a musician with rent Prezent: 1:07am by the playschool clock Mom Beck: Passed our bedtime, S Mama~K: 10:07 west coast, and the kids are sill awake! Prezent: Shirlise: sorry my questions are formatting funny Matt_Beck: I was Musical Director (different than a producer) It was really tough. A ton more responsibility. I learned a lot doing it tho. Prezent: did you enjoy it? and something you would like to persue further Shirlise: rock of ages was going to broadway? are you going to be involved in that? Matt_Beck: Well, I was offered the Musical Director position for it but had to turn it down because I got this really amazing opportunity to work with Bon and The Edge, so I had to take it even at the expense of losing Rock Of Ages. Matt_Beck: Bono (that is) Prezent: wow that is fabulous. Shirlise: Your working with Bono? Prezent: let me know if you need anyone to carry your water bottle or something Mama~K: what kind of project if you can say. Matt_Beck: Yes, Bono and The Edge have written the music to Spider Man Matt_Beck: a new Broadway musical and they insisted on choosing the band themselves. I came into audition amongst many others and The Edge and Bono liked my guitar playing the best :-) Shirlise: Well of course they would! We love it! Shirlise: Congrats Matt, what a great opportunity Prezent: and why wouldn't they lol those peeps have great taste Dorks Ahoy: wow, that's very impressive! - good job! Mama~K: They know true talent! congratulations! Matt_Beck: ITs very exciting and I cant wait! Shirlise: When does it start? Prezent: do we get to see the audition tapes ???? lol that would be fun Matt_Beck: rehearsals start soon but the show wont open til the end of the year Prezent: schweet how exciting Shirlise: Well on that note I think we will let you go....seems the chat has had some updates so people were having issues getting in....However as always thanks for spending the time with us Shirlise: We have some CD's to get sold :-) Prezent: thanks Matt Mama~K: so will rehersals interfere with a possible tour w/ rob? Dorks Ahoy: Thank you SOO much Matt! Matt_Beck: no problem. My pleasure. I'll have a bunch of cds with me at the Feb show, so just find me if anyone would like one Dorks Ahoy: We would ALL like one!!! Mama~K: I'll be there! Thanks matt Prezent: have you got a gig on in manhattan before then? Mom Beck: Thanks, Matt, and to all of your very supportive fans. They are the best. Good night Shirlise: I already have a sign up and peope will be looking for you :-) Prezent: Night Dolores sleep well Mama~K: Very nice to meet you Delores! Matt_Beck: Great! Shirlise: Thanks again Matt! Matt_Beck: Take care everybody. This was a lot of fun and I'll see you out there soon hopefully! Good night! Mama~K: have a safe trip to Palm Springs Matt!
